Air is the element of freedom, breath, and communication.

Carrying scent, moisture, and a host of birds, bees, and beneficial insects, air is the invisible thread connecting ecosystems via a web of complex chemical signals and interactions.

In the Pacific Northwest, moist ocean air, dynamic weather patterns, and the scent of resinous evergreens and blooming flowers, all drive essential ecological functions hidden within the landscape. Air mediates the exchange of gasses between plants, soils and the atmosphere, influencing plant growth, soil respiration, and the cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and water. Air is a vital yet unseen force bearing significant influence on wildlife and the way landscapes respond to drought, wildfire, and increasingly dramatic shifts in seasonal weather patterns.

Air is the element that governs intellect and all degrees of communication whether spoken or in more subtle forms. Physically, its substance remains invisible to the naked eye, yet we see its effects through the interaction and correspondence with the other elements.

At Walking Fish, striving for harmony with the elements allows us to learn, build, and grow alongside nature, accelerating innovation and forging the path to a greener future.

  • Pollinator & Habitat Gardens: Plant communities that convert lawns, hedgerows, and unused spaces into buzzing ecosystems that effectively suppress invasive species, increase pollination rates of nearby flowers and fruits, and provide both food and habitat for local wildlife (i.e. meadowscaping/wildlife corridor projects).

  • Custom Bee Boxes & Solitary Bee Houses: Top-Bar, Warré, and Solitary Bee Houses provide secure low-intervention style beekeeping for honey bees and many of our Washington native bees too. Constructed from local Western Red Cedar, these bee-boxes promote peak pollination and healthy bee populations.

  • Sensory Gardens: Spaces that engage all five senses and encourage interaction with the landscape. Often featuring a variety of plants, colors, textures, and aromas, with pathways and seating areas that invite exploration and relaxation. These gardens provide a uniquely calming environment, making them ideal for tea, study sessions, and peaceful getaways.

  • Buffers & Micro-climate Design: Planting layouts and living infrastructure that provide shade, redirect harsh winds, and help regulate temperatures, to create protective borders and dynamic micro-climates.

  • Carbon Sequestration: Advanced composting techniques, additions of bio-char, green walls, and moss graffiti are a few of the living systems we leverage to naturally capture CO2 from the atmosphere. These methods serve as effective air filters, improving air quality on a molecular level. Carbon sequestration aims to stabilize the carbon cycle and represents a sustainable approach to reducing our carbon footprint. â€‹â€‹
